What We Did In Storytime: Butterflies and Change

Happy Monday!  Today’s storytime was loosely themed.  We did some books about growing big and changing and some books on butterflies since our own Painted Ladies are now in chrysalis stage and will soon be beautiful butterflies!  For more on the butterflies at the library, click here.  For what fun books and songs we used in storytime today, keep reading!

Opening Rhyme: Let’s Get the Rhythm

Thanks again to JBrary for this rhyme!

Let’s get the rhythm of our knees

Let’s get the rhythm of our knees

Let’s get the rhythm of our knees

If you please

Let’s get the rhythm of our knees

Let’s get the rhythm of our shoulders

Let’s get the rhythm of our shoulders

Let’s get the rhythm of our shoulders

Big boulders!

Let’s get the rhythm of our shoulders

Let’s get the rhythm of our head

Let’s get the rhythm of our head

Let’s get the rhythm of our head

Oh, dread!

Let’s get the rhythm of our head

Let’s get the rhythm of our feet

Let’s get the rhythm of our feet

Let’s get the rhythm of our feet

How neat!

Let’s get the rhythm of our feet

I Am Just Right

by David McPhail

This brand new book is about the bittersweet moments that come with change and growing.  It’s perfectly aimed at our youngest friends who sometimes struggle with this the most and really puts change in a positive light.

Song: Hip Hop Body Rock

by Mr. Eric and Mr. Michael

Song: Walking Walking

Off Songs For Wiggleworms

Song: Flutter Flutter

Thanks to Storytime Kate for this cute song and prop idea.  The kids had a blast with this!  I found a cute butterfly image that was free to use as a pattern, cut my butterflies out of foam, taped them to craft sticks and ta-da!  I had some great storytime props for the littles to flutter around the room with while we sang.

Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle
Flutter, flutter butterfly
Floating in the spring sky
Floating by for all to see
Floating by so merrily
Flutter, flutter butterfly
Floating in the spring sky

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

by Eric Carle

Due to having a very scratchy throat, I had to change it up a bit from my set list.  I added a recording of Walking Walking which we did while using shaker eggs.  I ended up not doing the scarf songs I originally planned as singing and reading were sending me into coughing fits.  Thank goodness for excellent recorded music!

At playtime afterward, we had a cute butterfly craft that let the littles sponge paint.  There were some beautiful butterflies created for our families to hang up and enjoy at home.

And that’s what we did in storytime!  Check back next week to see what Miss Jessica has up her sleeve.
